 The legendary May 15, 1953 “Jazz at Massey Hall” concert in Toronto captured the only existing recording of Charles Mingus performing with Charlie Parker (billed as “Charlie Chan” for contractual reasons). Joined by Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, and Max Roach, this all-star bebop lineup ignited electrifying interplay. Dissatisfied with the faint bass, Mingus later overdubbed parts and released the record on his own Debut label. Today the album remains a definitive snapshot of Parker’s late period and a milestone that crowns the bebop era.
